Sometimes we Chicagoans have to travel out of town and although no city can compare to home, we do manage to enjoy ourselves. When we were in Philadelphia a few weeks ago I asked my cousin Howard Shapiro, Philadelphia Inquirer theater critic, where we should have lunch. He directed us to Reading Terminal Market.
What luck. It happened to be the Flower Show, it happened to be Friday, it happened to be lunch time and it happened to be a warm, sunny day just one week after the city had been hit with its fourth major snowstorm of the season. The place was jammed. There were restaurants, food vendors, produce stands, cook books, bright print fabrics from Provence, coffee, crafts, flowers, spices, sweets–everything related to food and then some. We couldn’t take it in fast enough. My daughter took over the camera and I tried to keep up. Here are highlights of Reading Market, in the eyes of a nine year old.
My daughter may have inherited my sweet tooth. We could have easily spent the whole afternoon at Reading Market, but I did the right thing. I took my daughter to see Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, even though I knew I wouldn’t get another chance to wander around an old-fashioned public food market for a long time.
I was wrong, and on Monday I’ll tell you why.
Great pics! The chocolate ears are kind of freaky. Your daughter is adorable!
My father, Benjamin Shapiro, was born in Philadephia and raised in Chicago. I wonder if we’re related.
