Garden Party

The Peterson Garden Project is among the gardens that will be featured in Victory, a documentary in the making about community gardening in Chicago, highlighting the history of Victory Gardening in the 1940s and detailing the ways in which gardening now impacts Chicago neighborhoods, health, families and the city’s future. The filmmakers, Dan Lerner from Cross Town Productions and Peter Hawley from the Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy, will be speaking about the documentary at an upcoming benefit for the Peterson Garden Project.

This community garden at the corner of Peterson and Campbell is worth a visit for no other reason than to see the almost magical sight of 157 individual vegetable gardens rising up against the backdrop of four lanes of traffic. But the gardeners at the Peterson Garden Project aren’t just good at planting and nurturing crops. They also throw great parties and they’ve planned a lot of activities for this benefit. Besides the movie talk, there’ll be food, wine tasting and music. Local chefs Kathy Skutecki (sous pastry chef to Gale Gand), Chris Stoye, The Scrumptious Pantry’s Lee Greene, Celeste Dolan and Tracy Kellner of Provenance Food & Wine will offer appetizers accompanied by an assortment of fine wines from Vinejoy. Folk musician Alison O’Konis and group Reciprocity will provide the evening’s music.

Chris, I’ll let you know if I can make it. It’s really a beautiful setting. I had a great time at their Fourth of July celebration.
